Antiracism in DBT

Date: May 11 - 12, 2023
Following Dr. Faria Kamal’s 2022 ISITDBT Antiracism talk, there has been keen interest to follow up with a 2-day foundational training in antiracism within DBT clinical practice. Drs Faria Kamal & Marcus Rodriguez will lead this foundational training on antiracism in DBT practice.

This training is designed both for DBT teams and individual DBT therapists who are interested in behaviorally changing their practices to become more effective antiracist therapists.  The training, similar to other foundational trainings in DBT, will include didactics, role plays, breakouts, behavioral rehearsals, and offer opportunities for consultation.

Learning Objectives:
1. Developing an anti-racism team and patient agreement, along with implementation.
2. Understanding therapist decision-making when it comes to issues of racism and most common therapist treatment interfering behaviors (TIBs).
3. Outline best practices following incidents of racism and therapists need to behaviorally respond.
4. Delineating common therapist dilemmas in individual and group sessions.
5. Identifying types and subsets of microaggressions that occur in therapy, along with specific interventions for each (sub)type.
6. Classify common roles and problematic reactions of White clinicians and patients in therapeutic settings, and how to more effectively respond when these roles and reactions emerge.
7. Outline anti-racist repair protocol.
